I don't need to set wb for every shot, nor do I need to always adjust exposure.

So here's my point: What benefit am I really getting if I'm not able to fine tune (some)adjustments in the RAW Converter that I usually do and unable to do those adjustments in 16-bit TIFF mode in Photoshop? I thought the whole purpose was the RAW file has so much info that its integrity is held up better for adjustments.

So by trial and error, I discovered that if I change the Mode to 8-bit, those options become available again. There were a couple of other menu options that are greyed out. I can adjust the levels or curves but only on the entire image. On some images I like to add a levels or curves adjustment layer, add a mask then paint in/out selectively. Now I'm in familiar territory but find that I don't have access to many of the type of adjustments I normally do. Then I transfer the shot to Photoshop, which opens as a 16-bit TIFF file. (Disregard that I'm using Canon software.just interested in the principals that apply). Things like exposure comp, saturation, sharpening, tone, contrast, etc. I started playing around with the various settings to see how they look. I open the RAW file up in the RAW viewer/converter. Well, I'm not sure if I'm missing something or I'm just tired and cranky (probably:wink: ) and am unsure of this whole thing.

I've always read about the greater latitude shooting RAW. This weekend, I went out shooting and decided to shoot RAW (+ sm jpg). I've always shot jpg and have developed a rather "fine-tuned" pp workflow that's effective, easy, and takes very little time to go from viewing the images in Explorer to working up and finishing the ones I want to post online. In principal, I'd like to ask for some help regarding processing of RAW image files.
